SEDATION

You do not have to be afraid anymore!
Usually dental treatment has been associated with unpleasant, and even traumatic experience. Generally, patients less and less frequently suffer from dental phobia, that is panic fear precluding any dental treatment. Fear of the sight of a needle, noise of a drill and pain related to the procedure... now such a nightmare belongs to the past! Currently, thanks to enormous progress in medicine and pharmacology, fear and pain may be completely removed from the dental surgery. The key for the perfect situation, in which the patient feels absolutely no pain or discomfort, in inhalation sedation with a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (N2O) together with local anaesthesia. Such a mixture is rightly called laughing gas, as is causes psychical relaxation and pleasant stunning, with basic reflexes and consciousness of the patient maintained. This patient-friendly and very safe method is particularly indicated for children, as they do not tolerate stress and pain. On the other hand, children react very well to nitrous oxide, dreaming about fairy adventures, flying or drifting in the water, air, clouds or space. The change in the behaviour of a difficult young patient is unbelievable; a large portion of such patients are not afraid of further visits in the surgery!

The sedation obtained by inhalation of odourless gas and oxygen mixture through a fragrant nose mask (of strawberry, orange or banana aroma) is indicated in the case of strong fear of dental treatment or injection, excessive vomiting reflex, hyperexcitability and necessity for long-lasting and unpleasant procedures. Except very few contraindications, such as first trimester of pregnancy or a lack of patient's compliance, laughing gas may be used in majority of the patients without particular concerns about the frequency of its use.
The effect of nitrous oxide disappear completely within few minutes from the stopping of application of the gas; thus, patient return to his or her normal performance very quickly after completion of the procedure - you may drive your car as early as 30 minutes after the procedure.
Alas, the method is still not a very popular one in Poland. Currently only about 40 Polish dental clinics offer this very beneficial for the patients method. One of the clinics that provide services according to modern approach to the patients and their needs is Villa Nova Dental Clinic.
